Joe Lane Hylton (4/21/1958 - 1/28/2015) was a guitarist and singer/songwriter residing in Jefferson County, Missouri (near St. Louis). For most of the past three decades, Joe has performed as lead guitarist in various acoustic and electric bands playing on the East Coast and in the Midwest. He has also been featured as a solo artist and singer/songwriter in the St. Louis area. Joe’s substantial repertoire ranges from blues to rock to traditional bluegrass and folk – each of which influences his songwriting and musical style. Joe is best known for his dynamic finger-picking and mastery of improvisations.

Joe first picked up a guitar in 1975 as a high school student in Norwalk, Connecticut. He continued to develop his abilities by playing in local bands throughout his years of college in Connecticut, while studying Psychology and while earning a Masters of Science degree in Special Education. His love of music complements his passion for educating, and as a Special Education Teacher he used music as a teaching tool in his classroom.

For several years after a serious car accident Joe had to cut back his active schedule, so he focused on studying music and perfecting the fluid finger-picking skills for which he is best known. In March 2008, Joe received advanced finger-style lessons from Jorma Kaukonen, rock legend from Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. (Jorma was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995.) With a well-honed thumb and renewed enthusiasm from this experience, Joe welcomed the opportunity to perform again.

Joe was actively involved in sharing music with the community.  Visit Acoustic Co-op Of Jefferson County to learn more about FREE open jam sessions hosted monthly by Joe (and now his wife) and attended regularly by a group of very talented musicians in the area, as well as acoustic musicians of all levels.   Joe also shared his time and talent with the Middle School students at the school where he taught, by sponsoring the popular Guitar Club which meets weekly.  Joe taught students of all levels, from chord basics to songwriting.
